About Barbie

Did you know that Barbie’s first outfit, when the doll originally launched in March 1959, was a black and white striped swimsuit?!  Her creator, Ruth Handler (whose husband was Elliot Handler and co-founder of Mattel), wanted an adult woman doll for her daughter, Barbara, to play with.  The only adult woman toys Barbara had were paper dolls.  So, Barbie was created and the rest is history.

I love that Barbie debuted in a swimsuit.  I’ve done by best to recreate her original look in the “Barbie” capsule.

Unique Vintage collaborated with Barbie several years ago to create Barbie’s debut outfit, her black and white striped strapless swimsuit!  The details are all here – the striped pattern, the sweetheart neckline, and the classic silhouette.  The suit also has detachable straps, a shelf bra, and a silicone top seam for support.  It’s also fully lined. It’s available in standard and plus sizes – in my capsule I’m showing the plus size.  BONUS:  Unique Vintage is a woman-owned business!

I chose simple 1.6″ 14k Gold Hoop earrings from Saks Fifth Avenue to match the original Barbie’s.

For her red lips, the “Rouge Rosie” color by La Bouche Rouge is a deep, yet bright red.

The Journee Collection Marlowe Sandal in Black are her open-toed, slip-on heels.

The Dior Eyewear White Cat Eye Sunglasses have the white frames with the blue lenses that match her look.  For those who might prefer a black lens in white frames like Margot Robbie’s in the teaser trailer for the movie, here’s another option by Versace.

Barbie has red finger and toenails.  I chose Karma Organic Nail Polish’s “Night on the Town” for her red nail polish.

Ok, so original Barbie didn’t have a handbag.  But, I thought the Likha Black Round Classic Handbag with Wood Handle would be fun addition to her look!  BONUS:  Each bag is handmade; each purchase empowers artisan communities in the Philippines!
